You may have noticed your child is no longer coming home with a spelling list to learn for a weekly spelling test. As a school, we have reviewed this teaching method and found it has little impact on the pupils' ability to spell words in their independent writing. We have therefore been trialling a new scheme where the emphasis is on teaching the pupils the building of words, spelling rules and etymology. Pupils in Key Stage 2 will have three short spelling lessons across the week, focused on one morpheme (a part of a word) and will explore how to build words using this. Teachers have seen an impact on pupils' independent spelling and will be continuing with this scheme of work. Key Stage 1 pupils will continue to learn spelling through their daily phonics sessions.
