This area of our website provides information and guidance for various aspects of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing.

The welfare and safety of pupils who attend our school is our paramount concern. We will promote the health, well-being and safety of the pupils in all we do.

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means:

  • Protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
  • Preventing harm to children’s mental or physical health or development
  • Ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes

Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18. Child Protection is part of Safeguarding and promoting welfare. It refers to the activity that is undertaken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are likely to suffer, significant harm.

All staff and governors at Boughton Primary School are aware and acknowledge that safeguarding incidents could happen anywhere, and staff must be alert to possible concerns arising.

Through our curriculum we teach children to stay safe and happy. We encourage the understanding that any problem or worry that they may have is legitimate, and to share their worries, big or small with their trusted adult at home or school.

Everyone in education shares an objective to help keep children and young people safe by contributing to:

  • Providing a safe environment for children and young people to learn in education settings; and
  • Identifying children and young people who are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm, and taking appropriate action with the aim of making sure they are kept safe both at home and in the education setting.

Boughton Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its pupils. This is the responsibility of all school staff, governors and volunteers. We will therefore:

  • Establish and maintain an environment where children feel secure and are encouraged to talk and are listened to.
  • Ensure that staff are able to identify welfare concerns and take appropriate action to address their concerns.
  • Ensure children know that there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried.
  • Include opportunities in the PHSE curriculum for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse.
  • Recognise that each pupil’s welfare is of paramount importance and that some children may be especially vulnerable to abuse e.g. those with special educational needs or those living in adverse circumstances.

We recognise that children who are abused or neglected may find it difficult to develop a sense of self-worth and to view the world positively. Whilst at school, their behaviour may be challenging. We will always take a considered and sensitive approach in order to support all of our pupils.
